Rheumatic heart disease: Queensland Project
Queensland would like to improve its knowledge of the burden of disease in relation to Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), particularly amongst the Indigenous population in the Southern and Central regions of the state. This exercise is a part of the RHD program Queensland, which aims to accurately maintain a recently established ARF/RHD register, which will act as a disease management and a recall system. For the purpose of mapping the disease in the Southern and Central Qld, in addition to the statistics from Qld Health hospitals we would also like to include any information from GPs regarding the number of active penicillin and Bicillin treatments and also how many of the individuals being treated are of Indigenous origin.
The aim of this mapping is to provide a snapshot of the prevalence, identify issues and differences in prevalence, if any, within population groups, regarding ARF and RHD. This mapping will add to the body of knowledge regarding this disease seriously affecting Indigenous people.
