New Practice Nurse Scholarships announced: 2009 Practice Nurse Scholarships open 31st August!
APNA are pleased to announce a new round of Practice Nurse Scholarships for the 2009-2010 financial year. Under the newly consolidated national Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship and Support Scheme, this latest round sees the release of over 500 CPD scholarships for practice nurses, providing up to $1500 each toward professional development. In recognition of the success of the recent addition of postgraduate scholarships to the scheme, a further 20 Postgraduate Scholarship places have been added, each providing up to $10,000 to practice nurses undertaking a postgraduate course of study.
Since it began in 2005 the Practice Nurse scholarship scheme, administered by APNA and funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, has offered over 2300 scholarships to practice nurses - providing access to over 1 in 4 of the current practice nurse workforce!
Past recipient Katherine Treble said “The scholarship program has enabled me to become a credentialed nurse pap-test provider working alongside 2 male GPs in a rural practice. As the nearest female alternative pap-test provider is 35-50kms away this accreditation provides a much needed service in our community and will hopefully lead to a greater number of women being screened routinely.”
Applications open on Monday 31st August 2009, and run until 25th September.

New national Nurses Award 2010
The Australian Industrial Relations Commission has released the new occupational national Nurses Award 2010 to commence in January 2010 under it's award modernisation scheme. From that date, all nurses except primary and secondary school nurses will be covered under a single national award. The occupational award for nurses follows strong campaigning by several nursing groups and the ANF. The new award will see nurses in general practice and nurses working in the hospital system under the same award for the first time. Possible implications for practice nurses include provisions for leave as well as weekend and holiday loadings. The award also has implications for the development of a formal career path for practice nurses in it's classification definitions and progress through 'pay points'. The Nurses Award 2010 can be viewed at http://www.airc.gov.au/awardmod/awards/nurses.pdf
